What it is

Cipbact is a brand of ciprofloxacin, which is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that fights bacterial infections. The registered form is a 500 mg tablet, registered with NAFDAC under number C4-0456.

What it's used for

Ciprofloxacin, the active ingredient in Cipbact, is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria. Based on available data, it is indicated for corneal ulcers and conjunctivitis (eye infections) caused by organisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae.

How it's taken

Dosage depends on the type and severity of infection. For corneal ulcers, the typical regimen involves applying two drops into the affected eye every 15 minutes for the first six hours, then every 30 minutes for the rest of the first day. On the second day, two drops are given hourly; from day three to fourteen, two drops every four hours. For conjunctivitis, dosing may be different. Always follow your doctor's instructions exactly as prescribed.

Common side effects

The most common side effect is local burning or discomfort. Other side effects include white crystalline precipitates (seen in about 17% of patients with frequent use), lid margin crusting, crystals or scales, foreign body sensation, itching, redness of the eye, and a bad taste after instillation. Less common effects include corneal staining and allergic reactions.

Important cautions

Do not use Cipbact if you have a history of hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or any other quinolone antibiotic. Serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) can occur rarely, even after the first dose. Symptoms may include swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, hives, and dizziness. Emergency treatment may be needed. Not for injection into the eye.
