What it's used for

According to product labeling for ciprofloxacin ophthalmic solution, ciprofloxacin is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye such as corneal ulcers and conjunctivitis caused by susceptible bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae.

How it's taken

The dosing information comes from the ophthalmic solution form. For corneal ulcers, the typical schedule is two drops every 15 minutes for the first six hours, then every 30 minutes for the rest of day one, hourly on day two, and every four hours from day three to fourteen. For conjunctivitis, two drops every two hours while awake for two days, then every four hours for five more days. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions.

Common side effects

The most frequently reported side effect is a local burning or discomfort in the eye. Other effects seen in less than 10% of patients include crusting of the eyelid margin, white crystalline deposits in the eye, a feeling of something in the eye, itching, redness of the conjunctiva, and a bad taste after using the drops. Less common side effects include corneal staining, keratopathy, keratitis, and allergic reactions.

Important cautions
