What it is

Ciprodivine is a brand of ciprofloxacin, an antibiotic that fights bacteria. It is available as 500 mg tablets and is registered with NAFDAC under number A4-3922.

What it's used for

Ciprodivine is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria. According to the product labeling, it is used for corneal ulcers (such as those caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae) and conjunctivitis (caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae).

How it's taken

The dosage and administration of Ciprodivine depend on the type and severity of the infection. For corneal ulcers, a typical regimen involves frequent application initially, then decreasing frequency over days. Always follow a doctor's or pharmacist's instructions exactly as prescribed.

Common side effects

The most common side effect is local burning or discomfort. Other possible effects include white crystalline precipitates (seen in about 17% of patients in studies), lid margin crusting, crystals or scales, a feeling of something in the eye, itching, redness of the white part of the eye, and a bad taste after use. Less common side effects (under 10%) include corneal staining, keratopathy, keratitis, and allergic reactions.

Important cautions

Do not use Ciprodivine if you have a history of hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or any other component. Ciprodivine should also be avoided if you have had an allergic reaction to other quinolone antibiotics. Serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) have been reported, which require immediate medical attention. This medicine is not for injection into the eye.
