What it is

Oftab-400 is a brand of ofloxacin, which belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics. It is available as a 400 mg tablet registered with NAFDAC under number A4-4375.

What it's used for

Ofloxacin is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, including conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers, caused by susceptible bacteria.

How it's taken

The typical dosing for ofloxacin in ophthalmic infections is as follows: For bacterial conjunctivitis, the recommended regimen is one to two drops every two to four hours on days 1 and 2, then one to two drops four times daily on days 3 through 7. For bacterial corneal ulcer, the regimen is one to two drops every 30 minutes while awake on days 1 and 2, with awakening at four and six hours after retiring to instill drops. After that, the frequency is reduced. Always follow your doctor's prescription.

Common side effects

The most common side effect reported with ofloxacin ophthalmic use is temporary eye burning or discomfort. Other possible side effects include stinging, redness, itching, chemical conjunctivitis/keratitis, swelling of the eye or face, feeling of a foreign body, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, tearing, dryness, and eye pain. Rarely, dizziness and nausea have been reported.

Important cautions

Ofloxacin ophthalmic solution should not be injected into the eye or used subconjunctivally. It is contraindicated in people who are allergic to ofloxacin, other quinolones, or any ingredient in the product. Rare but serious allergic reactions have occurred with systemic quinolones, including anaphylaxis. Seek medical help immediately if you experience signs of an allergic reaction. Do not use without a doctor's prescription.
