Ofaxin is a brand of ofloxacin, an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It is available as a 200 mg tablet.

What it's used for

According to product information, ofloxacin is used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis and bacterial corneal ulcer (eye infections).

How it's taken

The recommended dosing for ofloxacin ophthalmic solution: for conjunctivitis – days 1 and 2, one to two drops every 2–4 hours in the affected eye; days 3–7, one to two drops four times daily. For corneal ulcer – days 1 and 2, one to two drops every 30 minutes while awake and at 4 and 6 hours after retiring. Common side effects

The most frequently reported side effect is temporary eye burning or discomfort. Other possible effects include stinging, redness, itching, eye or facial swelling, foreign body sensation, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, tearing, dryness, and eye pain. Rare reports of dizziness and nausea have also been received.

Important cautions

Do not use Ofaxin if you have a history of allergy to ofloxacin or other quinolones. The ophthalmic solution should not be injected or placed directly into the eye’s anterior chamber. Severe allergic reactions (including anaphylaxis) have occurred with systemic quinolones. Stop use and get emergency help if you experience swelling of the face, throat, or tongue, difficulty breathing, or hives.
