Aflacin Eye: A Brand of Ofloxacin Eye Drops

What it is

Aflacin Eye is a brand of ofloxacin, which is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It comes as a 0.3% eye drop solution (NAFDAC No. 04-7440) and works by stopping the growth of bacteria that cause eye infections.

What it's used for

Aflacin Eye is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye such as bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) and bacterial corneal ulcer (an infection of the clear front part of the eye). It is only for infections caused by bacteria that are sensitive to ofloxacin.

How it's taken

For bacterial conjunctivitis, typical dosing is one to two drops in the affected eye every two to four hours on days 1 and 2, then one to two drops four times daily on days 3 to 7. For bacterial corneal ulcer, the dosing is more frequent: one to two drops every 30 minutes while awake on days 1 and 2, with doses also during the night. Always follow your doctor’s or pharmacist’s instructions exactly.

Common side effects

The most common side effect is temporary burning or discomfort in the eye. Other side effects may include stinging, redness, itching, swelling, a feeling of something in the eye, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, tearing, dryness, or eye pain. Rarely, dizziness or nausea may occur.

Important cautions

Aflacin Eye is for use in the eye only and must not be injected. Do not use it if you are allergic to ofloxacin, other quinolone antibiotics, or any ingredient in the drops. Although rare, serious allergic reactions (including anaphylaxis) have occurred with similar antibiotics taken by mouth. If you experience severe swelling, difficulty breathing, or hives, stop use and get emergency help. Tell your doctor about all medicines you use and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
