What it is

Clamfenac is a brand of diclofenac potassium, which is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that helps reduce pain and inflammation.

What it's used for

Clamfenac tablets are indicated for the relief of mild to moderate pain, treatment of primary dysmenorrhea (painful periods), and to relieve the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

How it's taken

Clamfenac is an immediate-release tablet taken by mouth. The typical starting dose for pain or dysmenorrhea is 50 mg three times daily. Your doctor will determine the best dose and duration for you based on your condition. Always use the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time to reduce the risk of side effects.

Common side effects

Possible side effects include gastrointestinal problems such as bleeding, ulcers, and perforation; increased risk of serious cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke; liver toxicity; high blood pressure; heart failure; kidney problems; and allergic reactions including severe skin reactions. Some people may also experience hyperkalemia (high potassium) or blood disorders. This is not a complete list.

Important cautions

Do not take Clamfenac if you are allergic to diclofenac, aspirin, or any other NSAID, or if you have had asthma, hives, or allergic reactions after taking aspirin or NSAIDs. Caution is needed in patients with cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, liver or kidney problems, or those at risk of bleeding. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration.
