What it is

Velafil is a brand of tadalafil, which belongs to a class of medicines called phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors. It works by increasing blood flow to certain parts of the body, helping with erection problems and urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH).

What it's used for

Velafil is used for three main purposes: treating erectile dysfunction (ED), treating the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and treating both conditions together when they occur at the same time. When used with finasteride for BPH, treatment is typically recommended for up to 26 weeks.

How it's taken

Do not split the tablet; take the whole dose as directed by your doctor. For erectile dysfunction used as needed, the typical starting dose is 10 mg taken before sexual activity. The dose may be increased to 20 mg or decreased to 5 mg based on how well it works and any side effects. This medicine should not be taken more than once a day. Your doctor will decide the best dose and schedule for you.

Common side effects

The most common side effects, seen in at least 2% of people, include headache, indigestion (dyspepsia), back pain, muscle pain, stuffy nose, facial flushing, and pain in the arms or legs.

Important cautions

Do not use Velafil if you are taking any form of organic nitrate (medicines for chest pain like nitroglycerin) or riociguat, as this can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Also avoid it if you have had a serious allergic reaction to tadalafil. Before starting treatment, your doctor should check your cardiovascular health to ensure sexual activity is safe. Taking Velafil with alpha-blockers, blood pressure medicines, or large amounts of alcohol (5 or more drinks) may lead to low blood pressure.
