What it is

Swipen-M is a brand of meropenem, which belongs to a class of antibiotics called carbapenems. It is a strong antibiotic used when other medicines may not work.

What it's used for

Swipen-M is used to treat complicated skin and skin structure infections in adults and children 3 months and older, complicated infections inside the belly (intra-abdominal infections) in adults and children, and bacterial meningitis in children 3 months and older. It is also used to prevent the growth of drug-resistant bacteria.

How it's taken

Swipen-M is given as an injection into a vein or as an infusion over a period of time. It is usually administered by a healthcare professional in a hospital or clinic. The dose and how often it is given depend on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient’s condition. Always follow your doctor’s instructions exactly.

Common side effects

Common side effects may include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, rash, and pain or swelling at the injection site. More serious side effects can include severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), seizures, severe skin reactions (such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome), and diarrhoea caused by Clostridium difficile. Tell your doctor right away if you notice any unusual symptoms.

Important cautions

Do not use Swipen-M if you are allergic to meropenem or any other beta-lactam antibiotic (e.g., penicillins, cephalosporins). Inform your doctor if you have a history of seizures, kidney problems, or if you take valproic acid (a seizure medicine) because meropenem can lower its levels and increase the risk of seizures. Seek emergency medical care if you experience signs of a serious allergic reaction, severe skin rash, or seizures.
