What it is

What it's used for

Meropenem is used to treat complicated skin and skin structure infections (in adults and children 3 months and older), complicated intra-abdominal infections (in adults and children), and bacterial meningitis (in children 3 months and older). Healthcare providers prescribe it only for infections caused by bacteria that are likely to respond, to help prevent antibiotic resistance.

How it's taken

This medicine is given as an intravenous injection or infusion (drip) by a doctor or nurse. It is typically administered every 8 hours for a specified period. The exact dose and duration depend on the type and severity of infection, the patient's kidney function, and other factors. Always follow the prescription provided by your healthcare provider.

Common side effects

Serious side effects have been reported with meropenem. These include severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), severe skin reactions, seizures (especially in people with certain risk factors), and diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile. It may also reduce the level of valproic acid (a seizure medicine) in the blood, leading to breakthrough seizures. Because it is a strong antibiotic, using it can lead to the growth of bacteria that are not killed by it. If you experience any unusual symptoms, tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Important cautions

Do not use meropenem if you are allergic to any ingredient in it or to other beta-lactam antibiotics (such as penicillins, cephalosporins, or other carbapenems).
