What it is

Actropen for is a penem antibacterial (a type of antibiotic). Its active ingredient is meropenem.

What it's used for

Actropen for is indicated for the treatment of complicated skin and skin structure infections in adults and children aged 3 months and older; complicated intra-abdominal infections in adults and children; and bacterial meningitis in children aged 3 months and older. It is meant to be used only when bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected, to reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria.

How it's taken

Actropen for is given by intravenous infusion over 15 to 30 minutes or by intravenous bolus injection over 3 to 5 minutes. Doses vary by infection type and patient age. For example, in adults with complicated skin infections, a typical dose is 500 mg every 8 hours, while for intra-abdominal infections, the typical dose is 1 g every 8 hours. Your doctor will determine the right dose and treatment duration. Always follow the prescription exactly.

Common side effects

Possible side effects include hypersensitivity (allergic) reactions, severe skin reactions, seizures, diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile, and overgrowth of bacteria that are not killed by the antibiotic. Important cautions

Actropen for should not be used in patients with known allergies to meropenem, other penem antibiotics, or any beta-lactam antibiotics (such as penicillins or cephalosporins). It may cause serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures. Co-administration with valproic acid or divalproex sodium can lower valproic acid levels, risking breakthrough seizures. Prolonged use may lead to Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea and development of drug-resistant bacteria.
