Aropem: A Brand of Meropenem for Serious Infections

What it is

Aropem is a brand of meropenem, which belongs to a class of antibiotics called penems. It works by killing certain bacteria that cause serious infections.

What it's used for

Aropem (meropenem) is used to treat complicated skin and skin structure infections in adults and children aged 3 months and older, complicated infections inside the abdomen (such as peritonitis) in both adults and children, and bacterial meningitis in children aged 3 months and older. It should only be used for infections caused by bacteria that are susceptible to meropenem, to help reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria.

How it's taken

Aropem is given by a healthcare professional as an injection into a vein (intravenous) or as an infusion over 15 to 30 minutes. The dose and duration depend on the type and severity of the infection, the patient's kidney function, and other factors. Always follow your doctor's instructions exactly.

Common side effects

Common side effects of meropenem include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, rash, and irritation at the injection site. More serious side effects can occur, such as allergic reactions (including severe skin reactions), seizures, and diarrhoea caused by Clostridium difficile. Tell your doctor right away if you experience any unusual symptoms.

Important cautions

Do not use Aropem if you are allergic to meropenem or any other beta-lactam antibiotic (such as penicillin or cephalosporins). Serious and sometimes fatal allergic reactions have been reported. Meropenem can lower the levels of valproic acid (a seizure medicine), which may increase the risk of seizures. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take. Use in pregnant or breastfeeding women should be only if clearly needed and under medical supervision.
