What it is

Artepenum is a brand of meropenem, a carbapenem antibiotic that kills a wide range of bacteria. It is used for serious infections when other antibiotics may not work.

What it's used for

Artepenum is used to treat complicated skin and skin structure infections (in adults and children 3 months and older), complicated intra-abdominal infections (in adults and children), and bacterial meningitis (in children 3 months and older). It should only be used to treat or prevent infections that are likely to be caused by susceptible bacteria, to reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria.

How it's taken

Artepenum is a powder that is mixed with a liquid and given as an injection into a vein (intravenous infusion or bolus) or as a muscle injection. The dose and how often it is given depend on the type and severity of the infection, the patient's kidney function, and their weight. Treatment is typically given under the supervision of a doctor or nurse. Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions exactly.

Common side effects

Common side effects of meropenem include allergic reactions (such as rash, itching, swelling, or trouble breathing), seizures or other nervous system effects, severe skin reactions, diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile bacteria, and overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms. Tell your doctor right away if you experience any of these.

Important cautions

Do not use Artepenum if you are allergic to meropenem, other carbapenems, or any beta-lactam antibiotic (like penicillins or cephalosporins) because serious allergic reactions can occur. Tell your doctor if you have a history of seizures, kidney problems, or if you take valproic acid for epilepsy, as meropenem can lower the levels of this medicine and cause breakthrough seizures. Artepenum should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
