What it is

Metrokris is a brand of metronidazole, which is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medicine. It belongs to the nitroimidazole class and works by stopping the growth of certain parasites and bacteria.

What it's used for

Metrokris suspension is used to treat trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. It is used in both men and women when the infection is confirmed by a laboratory test.

How it's taken

This medicine is taken by mouth as an oral suspension. The dose and length of treatment are decided by a doctor. For trichomoniasis, common regimens include a one-day course (usually a single large dose) or a seven-day course taken three times daily. Always follow your doctor’s instructions exactly.

Common side effects

Serious side effects can occur with metronidazole. These include seizures, brain inflammation (encephalopathy), meningitis, vision problems, and nerve damage causing numbness or tingling in the hands or feet. Nerve damage may persist even after stopping the medicine. Tell your doctor right away if you notice any of these symptoms.

Important cautions

Do not take Metrokris if you are allergic to metronidazole or similar medicines. It should not be used during the first three months of pregnancy for trichomoniasis. Also, do not take it if you have used disulfiram (a medicine for alcohol dependence) within the last two weeks, as this can cause serious mental reactions. Rare but severe skin reactions (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome) have been reported. Stop taking the medicine and seek medical help if you develop a rash, blisters, or mouth sores.
