Afrigyl: Metronidazole Suspension – Uses, Side Effects, and Cautions

What it is

Afrigyl is a brand of metronidazole, an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medicine. It is available as a 200 mg/5 mL suspension (liquid) and is registered with NAFDAC (A11-0598).

What it's used for

Afrigyl (metronidazole) is used to treat trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. It is prescribed for both symptomatic and asymptomatic infections in females and males when laboratory tests confirm the presence of the organism. Your doctor may also prescribe it for other infections, as metronidazole is effective against certain bacteria and parasites.

How it's taken

Afrigyl suspension is taken by mouth. The dose and duration of treatment are determined by your doctor based on the condition being treated and the individual's response. Always follow the prescription instructions exactly; do not change the dose or stop early without consulting your healthcare provider.

Common side effects

Like all medicines, Afrigyl can cause side effects. The most serious reported effects include seizures, encephalopathy, aseptic meningitis, optic and peripheral neuropathy (numbness, tingling, or pain in the hands or feet). If you experience any unusual symptoms, especially nerve-related ones, stop the medicine and contact a doctor immediately. Other side effects may occur; discuss them with your pharmacist or physician.

Important cautions

Do not use Afrigyl if you are allergic to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole medicines. It is generally not recommended during the first three months of pregnancy. Avoid alcohol and any products containing disulfiram (used for alcohol dependence) while taking this medicine, as it can cause serious psychiatric reactions. Stop the medicine and seek medical help if you develop a severe skin rash, blisters, or mouth sores, which could be signs of serious skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
