What it is

Bugyl is a brand of metronidazole, an antibiotic that belongs to the nitroimidazole class. It is used to treat infections caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis.

What it's used for

Bugyl (metronidazole) is indicated for the treatment of trichomoniasis in both females and males. In females, it is used for symptomatic infections and also for asymptomatic cases where the organism is found in the cervix or vagina. The presence of the trichomonad can interfere with Pap smear results, so treatment may be recommended.

How it's taken

Bugyl tablets are taken by mouth. The dosage for trichomoniasis depends on the treatment plan. Typically, for females, one common regimen is a single dose of 2 grams (which equals ten 200 mg tablets) taken at once, or divided into two 1-gram doses on the same day. Another option is 250 mg three times daily for seven days. Always follow your doctor’s prescription. Do not adjust your dose without consulting a healthcare professional.

Common side effects

Common side effects may include nausea, headache, metallic taste, and loss of appetite. More serious side effects include seizures, encephalopathy (brain inflammation), meningitis, and nerve damage causing numbness or tingling in the arms or legs (peripheral neuropathy). If you experience any of these serious symptoms, stop the medicine and seek medical attention immediately.

Important cautions

Do not use Bugyl if you are allergic to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole drugs. It is contraindicated during the first trimester of pregnancy for trichomoniasis. Avoid alcohol while taking Bugyl and for at least 48 hours after finishing the course, as it can cause a severe reaction (disulfiram-like reaction). Do not take Bugyl if you have taken disulfiram within the last two weeks. Inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking. Severe skin reactions (SCARs) have been reported, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Stop the medicine and get emergency help if you develop a rash, blisters, or skin peeling.
