What it is

What it's used for

Flanizol is used to treat trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. It is prescribed for both symptomatic infections and asymptomatic cases where laboratory tests confirm the presence of the organism.

How it's taken

Flanizol tablets are taken by mouth. The dose and duration depend on the condition. For trichomoniasis in women, a doctor may prescribe a single 2 gram dose (taken as one dose or two 1 gram doses on the same day) or a seven-day course of 250 mg taken three times daily. Since each Flanizol tablet contains 200 mg of metronidazole, your doctor will tell you exactly how many tablets to take. Always follow your prescription exactly.

Common side effects

Serious side effects include convulsive seizures, brain inflammation (encephalopathy), aseptic meningitis, and nerve damage (optic or peripheral neuropathy) causing numbness or tingling in the arms or legs. Important cautions

Do not take Flanizol if you are allergic to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole medicines. It should not be used during the first trimester of pregnancy for trichomoniasis. Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine and for at least 48 hours after the last dose, as it may cause severe nausea, vomiting, and headache. Also, do not take Flanizol if you have taken disulfiram within the last two weeks. Seek emergency care if you develop skin rash, blistering, or peeling skin, as severe allergic reactions can occur.
