What it is

What it's used for

Almaygyl (metronidazole) is used to treat trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. It is used in both females and males when the infection is confirmed by laboratory tests. It may also be used when the infection is linked to conditions like endocervicitis or cervicitis.

How it's taken

This medicine is taken by mouth as a tablet. The dosage depends on the condition being treated and is determined by a healthcare provider. Do not change your dose or stop taking it without consulting a doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects

Serious side effects have been reported with metronidazole, including seizures, brain inflammation (encephalopathy), meningitis, and nerve damage (numbness or tingling in the arms or legs). If you experience any of these, stop the medicine and seek medical help immediately. Other possible reactions include severe skin reactions (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis) that can be life-threatening.

Important cautions

Do not take Almaygyl if you are allergic to metronidazole or any other nitroimidazole drugs. It should not be used during the first three months of pregnancy for trichomoniasis. If you have taken disulfiram (a medicine for alcohol dependence) within the last two weeks, do not take metronidazole as it can cause a psychotic reaction. Always inform your doctor of all other medicines you are taking.
