What it is

Labtrogyl is a brand of metronidazole, a medicine that belongs to a group called nitroimidazole antibiotics. It works against certain parasites and bacteria.

What it's used for

This medicine is used to treat trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. It can be used in both males and females when the infection is confirmed by laboratory tests, and in females when the organism is linked to inflammation of the cervix or cervical erosion.

How it's taken

Labtrogyl is taken by mouth as an oral suspension. The dose and length of treatment depend on the condition being treated, the patient’s age and weight. Your doctor or pharmacist will tell you exactly how much to take. Always follow their instructions.

Common side effects

The most serious side effects reported with metronidazole include convulsive seizures, encephalopathy, aseptic meningitis, and nerve problems such as numbness or tingling in the hands or feet. Severe skin reactions like toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms have also occurred. If you notice any of these, stop the medicine and get medical help right away.

Important cautions

Do not use Labtrogyl if you are allergic to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole drugs. It should not be used in the first trimester of pregnancy for trichomoniasis. Avoid alcohol and medicines containing disulfiram while taking this drug, as this can cause serious psychological reactions. If you develop signs of nerve damage or a severe skin rash, stop the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
