What it is

Anivega is a brand of sildenafil, which belongs to a class of medicines called phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors. These drugs are used to treat erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation.

How it's taken

The typical dose is 50 mg taken about 1 hour before sexual activity, but it can be taken between 30 minutes and 4 hours beforehand. Depending on how well it works and how you tolerate it, the dose may be increased to a maximum of 100 mg or decreased to 25 mg. Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours. Always follow your doctor’s instructions.

Common side effects

Possible side effects include cardiovascular events (especially in men with underlying heart conditions), prolonged erection lasting more than 4 hours (priapism), sudden vision loss in one or both eyes, hearing loss, and low blood pressure when taken with alpha-blockers or certain blood pressure medicines. Important cautions

Do not take Anivega if you use any form of nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin) or guanylate cyclase stimulators like riociguat, as this can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Avoid sexual activity if your heart condition makes it unsafe. If an erection lasts longer than 4 hours, get emergency treatment immediately. Stop taking the medicine and see a doctor if you have sudden vision loss in one or both eyes.
