What it is

Labkon-50 is a brand of spironolactone 50 mg tablets. Spironolactone belongs to a class of drugs called aldosterone antagonists. It works by blocking a hormone called aldosterone, which helps the body balance salt and water. This action helps reduce fluid buildup and lower blood pressure.

What it's used for

Labkon-50 is used for several conditions. In adults with certain types of heart failure (NYHA Class III-IV with reduced ejection fraction), it helps improve survival, manage edema (swelling from fluid), and reduce the need for hospital stays. It is also added to other medicines to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Additionally, it manages edema in adults with cirrhosis of the liver when other treatments are not enough. It is also used to treat primary hyperaldosteronism, a condition where the body makes too much aldosterone.

How it's taken

Labkon-50 tablets are taken by mouth. The dose depends on the condition being treated. For heart failure, treatment typically starts at 25 mg once daily. For hypertension, the starting dose is usually 25 to 100 mg daily, taken as a single dose or divided into smaller doses. For edema, treatment usually starts in a hospital, with an initial dose of 100 mg daily (single or divided). For primary hyperaldosteronism, the starting dose can be 100 to 400 mg daily in preparation for surgery; for people who cannot have surgery, the lowest effective dose is used. Always follow your doctor's instructions. Do not change your dose without medical advice.

Common side effects

Possible side effects of spironolactone include high potassium levels in the blood (hyperkalemia), low blood pressure (hypotension), worsening kidney function, electrolyte and metabolic problems, and breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia). Other side effects may include drowsiness, headache, and stomach upset. Tell your doctor if you experience any unusual symptoms.

Important cautions

Labkon-50 should not be used in people with high potassium levels (hyperkalemia), Addison's disease, or those taking a medicine called eplerenone. Before starting treatment, your doctor will check your potassium levels and kidney function. While on treatment, you will need regular blood tests to monitor potassium, electrolytes, uric acid, and blood sugar. Use caution if you have liver disease with cirrhosis and ascites because it may worsen neurological function. This medicine may cause dizziness or low blood pressure, especially when standing up quickly. Do not use potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium unless your doctor tells you to. Always tell your doctor and pharmacist about all medicines you take.
