What it is

Clarithroxal is a brand of clarithromycin, which belongs to a class of antibiotics called macrolides. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria.

What it's used for

Clarithroxal is used to treat mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, acute maxillary sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, acute otitis media in children, disseminated mycobacterial infections, and Helicobacter pylori infection with duodenal ulcer disease in adults.

How it's taken

The typical dose and duration depend on the specific infection being treated and the patient's condition. Clarithroxal tablets are usually taken every 12 hours for a set number of days. Your doctor will determine the correct dose for you. Follow your prescription exactly and do not share this medicine.

Common side effects

Serious side effects may include allergic reactions, irregular heartbeat (QT prolongation), liver problems, severe diarrhoea, and worsening of myasthenia gravis. Less common side effects may include taste disturbance, nausea, and abdominal pain. Tell your doctor if you experience any unusual symptoms.

Important cautions

Do not take Clarithroxal if you are allergic to clarithromycin or any macrolide antibiotic. It should not be used with certain medicines such as cisapride, pimozide, colchicine (if you have kidney or liver problems), lomitapide, lovastatin, simvastatin, ergot alkaloids, or lurasidone. Inform your doctor about all medications you take. Avoid use if you have a history of jaundice or liver problems with clarithromycin, or if you have a prolonged QT interval, low potassium or magnesium, or slow heart rate. Stop the medicine and seek medical help immediately if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction, liver injury, or irregular heartbeat.
