Clariglob (Clarithromycin) 500 mg Tablets – What You Should Know

What it is

A macrolide antimicrobial (a type of antibiotic) that stops the growth of certain bacteria.

What it's used for

For mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including acute worsening of chronic bronchitis, acute sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, uncomplicated skin infections, acute ear infections in children, and for treating or preventing disseminated mycobacterial infections. It is also used in adults to treat Helicobacter pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease.

How it's taken

Typically taken every 12 hours (twice daily) with or without food. The duration of treatment depends on the type of infection – often 7 to 14 days for most infections, but different regimens exist for H. pylori or mycobacterial infections. Always follow your doctor's exact prescription; do not adjust the dose without medical advice.

Common side effects

Possible side effects include acute hypersensitivity reactions (allergic reactions), QT prolongation (an abnormal heart rhythm), hepatotoxicity (liver injury), Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, and worsening of myasthenia gravis. Important cautions

Do not use Clariglob if you are allergic to clarithromycin or any macrolide drug, or if you have a history of cholestatic jaundice or liver problems with clarithromycin. Avoid combining it with certain medicines such as cisapride, pimozide, colchicine (if you have kidney or liver problems), lomitapide, lovastatin, simvastatin, ergot alkaloids, or lurasidone. Also avoid use if you have known QT prolongation, certain heart rhythm problems, low potassium/magnesium, or slow heart rate. Stop taking and seek medical help if signs of an allergic reaction or hepatitis appear.
