Erythrofil: A Brand of Erythromycin

What it is

Erythrofil contains erythromycin, a medicine applied to the skin to treat pimples and acne breakouts. It comes as a 500 mg tablet and is registered with NAFDAC under number A4-8028.

What it's used for

Erythrofil (erythromycin) is used on the skin to treat acne vulgaris. It is applied to affected areas such as the face, neck, shoulders, chest, and back.

How it's taken

Typically, the medicine is applied twice a day — in the morning and evening. First wash the skin with warm water and soap, then pat it dry. Use the applicator top to apply the solution; if you use your fingertips, wash your hands after. If dryness or peeling occurs, you may reduce how often you apply it.

Common side effects

Some people may experience peeling, dryness, itching, redness, or oiliness on the treated skin. Eye irritation and skin tenderness have also been reported. Rarely, generalised hives (urticaria) requiring steroid treatment have occurred.

Important cautions

Do not use Erythrofil if you are allergic to erythromycin or any ingredient in the product. If you develop diarrhoea while using it, tell your doctor promptly, as this could be a sign of a serious gut infection (pseudomembranous colitis).
