What it is

EMPL Erythromycin Stearate is a brand of the generic antibiotic erythromycin. It belongs to the macrolide class of antibiotics, which work by stopping the growth of certain bacteria.

What it's used for

Erythromycin is indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris. It is applied to acne lesions on areas like the face, neck, shoulders, chest, and back.

How it's taken

This medication should be applied over the affected areas twice a day (morning and evening) after the skin is thoroughly washed with warm water and soap and patted dry. It should be applied with the applicator top or, if using fingertips, hands should be washed after application. Drying and peeling may be controlled by reducing how often it is applied.

Common side effects

Common side effects reported with topical use include peeling, dryness, itching, redness, and oiliness. Eye irritation and skin tenderness have also been reported. Rarely, generalized hives that may require steroid treatment have occurred.

Important cautions

Do not use if you have shown an allergic reaction to erythromycin or any of its ingredients. Antibiotics like erythromycin have been known to cause pseudomembranous colitis, a condition with diarrhea that can range from mild to life-threatening. If you develop diarrhea while using this medicine, tell your doctor immediately.
