Important cautions
Metformin can cause a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis, especially in people with severe kidney problems. Do not use this medicine if you have severe kidney disease (eGFR below 30), are allergic to metformin, or have metabolic acidosis including diabetic ketoacidosis. Metformin may lower vitamin B12 levels, so your doctor should check your blood regularly. The risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) increases if you also take insulin or certain other diabetes medicines. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take.
