What it's used for
Viridal is used as a palliative (temporary) therapy to maintain the patency of the ductus arteriosus in newborns with congenital heart defects such as pulmonary atresia, pulmonary stenosis, tricuspid atresia, tetralogy of Fallot, interruption of the aortic arch, coarctation of the aorta, or transposition of the great vessels. It is given before corrective or palliative surgery.
Common side effects
Common side effects include apnea (temporary stop in breathing) in about 12% of newborns, fever in about 14%, and seizures in about 4%. Other side effects may include flushing, bradycardia, hypotension, diarrhea, and changes in blood sugar levels. Serious side effects include gastric outlet obstruction due to antral hyperplasia with long-term use.
Important cautions
Alprostadil must be diluted before use. Newborns receiving this medicine for more than 120 hours should be monitored for gastric outlet obstruction. There are no known contraindications for this medicine.
