Silotrif (silodosin) 4mg capsules are an alpha-blocker medicine used to relieve symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH). It is available over the counter in Nigeria.

What it is

Silodosin is a selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist, a type of alpha-blocker. It works by relaxing muscles in the bladder neck and prostate to improve urine flow and reduce BPH symptoms. It is not used to treat high blood pressure.

What it's used for

Silodosin is used to treat the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) – such as difficulty starting urination, weak stream, frequent or urgent need to urinate, and waking at night to urinate.

Common side effects

The most common side effects (occurring in 2% or more of patients) include retrograde ejaculation, dizziness, diarrhoea, a drop in blood pressure when standing up (orthostatic hypotension), headache, stuffy or runny nose (nasopharyngitis), and nasal congestion.

Important cautions

Do not take silodosin if you have severe kidney impairment (creatinine clearance below 30 mL/min) or severe liver impairment (Child-Pugh score 10 or higher), or if you are also taking strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g. ketoconazole, clarithromycin, itraconazole, ritonavir). Avoid taking silodosin together with other alpha-blockers. Be cautious of dizziness or fainting when standing up, especially when starting treatment. Your doctor should examine you to rule out prostate cancer before starting BPH therapy.
