Common side effects
Serious nervous system side effects have been reported, including seizures, encephalopathy, aseptic meningitis, optic and peripheral neuropathy (numbness or tingling in the hands or feet). Severe skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) can occur.
Important cautions
Do not use if you are allergic to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole drugs. Avoid use during the first trimester of pregnancy. Do not take disulfiram while using metronidazole, as a psychotic reaction may occur. Stop use and seek medical help if you experience numbness, tingling, seizures, or a severe skin rash.
