Common side effects include: • Myelosuppression (low white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets) • Haemolytic anaemia (destruction of red blood cells) • Increased risk of other cancers (malignancies) • Vasculitic toxicities (inflammation of blood vessels) • Risks when used with certain antiretroviral drugs for HIV • Radiation recall (skin reaction at a previous radiation site) • Macrocytosis (enlarged red blood cells) • Pulmonary toxicity (lung problems)
Important cautions
Do not take Hydroxyurea if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients. Your doctor will check your blood counts before and during treatment. If your bone marrow function is very weak, treatment may not be started. Hydroxyurea can cause harm to an unborn baby, so effective birth control should be used during treatment. Protect your skin from the sun as this medicine can increase the risk of skin cancers. Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, as the dose may need adjustment.
