What it is

Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic that works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Doxyvard is a brand containing this active ingredient.

What it's used for

Doxyvard is used to treat bacterial infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. The choice of treatment should be guided by culture and sensitivity tests or local epidemiology. It is indicated for infections such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever and other tick-borne diseases, respiratory tract infections, and urinary tract infections.

How it's taken

Doxyvard capsules are typically taken by mouth. The usual adult dose is 200 mg on the first day, given as 100 mg every 12 hours, followed by 100 mg daily. For more severe infections, the dose may be 100 mg every 12 hours. Dosing for children is based on weight and age, but doxycycline is not recommended for children under 8 years due to risk of tooth discoloration. Always follow your doctor's instructions.

Common side effects

Common side effects include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, inflammation of the tongue (glossitis), difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), and inflammation of the bowel (enterocolitis). Less common but serious side effects include pancreatitis and liver toxicity (hepatotoxicity). Discoloration of teeth (yellow-gray-brown) may occur, especially with long-term use in children under 8 years. If you experience severe side effects, contact your doctor.

Important cautions

Doxyvard should not be used in people who are allergic to tetracyclines. It can cause permanent tooth discoloration if used during tooth development – that is, during the last half of pregnancy, infancy, and childhood up to 8 years. It should be avoided in these situations unless absolutely necessary. Use in children under 8 years is generally not recommended. Always tell your doctor about your medical history and any other medicines you are taking.
