What it is

Aluvia is a brand of lopinavir + ritonavir. It belongs to a class of drugs called protease inhibitors, used to treat HIV infection. It comes as a capsule containing 200 mg of lopinavir and 50 mg of ritonavir, with NAFDAC registration number A4-1004.

What it's used for

Aluvia is used together with other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and children aged 14 days and older. The choice to use this medicine should be guided by lab tests and treatment history because certain viral mutations can affect how well it works.

How it's taken

The typical total daily dose for adults is 800 mg of lopinavir and 200 mg of ritonavir, taken either once or twice daily. Capsules must be swallowed whole and can be taken with or without food. Do not chew, break, or crush them. Once-daily dosing is not recommended for patients who have certain resistance-associated substitutions. Always follow your doctor’s instructions.

Common side effects

Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and increased blood levels of triglycerides and cholesterol. Serious side effects may include pancreatitis, liver problems, and changes in heart rhythm (QT and PR interval prolongation).
