Levofloxacin is used to treat various bacterial infections in adults, including: pneumonia (hospital-acquired and community-acquired), complicated and uncomplicated skin infections, chronic bacterial prostatitis, urinary tract infections (complicated and uncomplicated), acute pyelonephritis, inhalational anthrax (post-exposure), and plague.
Common side effects
The most common side effects (occurring in at least 3% of patients) include nausea, headache, diarrhoea, insomnia, constipation, and dizziness.
Important cautions
Do not use Levofloxacin if you are allergic to levofloxacin or any other quinolone antibiotic. Serious side effects can occur, including disabling and potentially irreversible reactions, tendonitis or tendon rupture, severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), liver injury, severe diarrhoea (Clostridium difficile colitis), changes in heart rhythm (QT prolongation), and blood or kidney problems. Stop taking the medicine and seek medical help immediately if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or severe diarrhoea.
