What it's used for
It is used to treat urinary tract infections in adults and children aged 1 month and older when caused by susceptible bacteria such as E. coli, Enterococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella, and Enterobacter species. It is not used for kidney infections (pyelonephritis) or abscesses around the kidney.
Common side effects
Serious side effects may include allergic reactions, lung problems, liver damage, nerve damage, hemolytic anemia (destruction of red blood cells), and severe diarrhea (C. difficile). Seek urgent medical help if you experience difficulty breathing, yellowing of skin or eyes, numbness or tingling, or unusual tiredness.
Important cautions
Do not use nitrofurantoin if you are allergic to it, or if you have ever had liver problems or jaundice while taking it. It is also not safe if you have severe kidney disease, are unable to urinate, or have significantly reduced kidney function. Tell your doctor about all medical conditions and medicines you take.
