Dartmal 20/120 mg Tablet
Dartmal is a combination antimalarial tablet containing artemether and lumefantrine. It is used to treat acute, uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum in people aged 2 months and older weighing at least 5 kg.
What it is
Dartmal is a fixed-dose antimalarial medicine that combines two active ingredients: artemether and lumefantrine. It belongs to a class of drugs known as artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs).
What it's used for
Dartmal is indicated for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria infections due to Plasmodium falciparum in patients who are at least 2 months old and weigh 5 kg or more. It is effective in regions where resistance to older antimalarials like chloroquine has been reported. This medicine is not approved for severe or complicated malaria, nor for preventing malaria.
Common side effects
Common side effects in adults include headache, loss of appetite (anorexia), dizziness, weakness (asthenia), and joint pain (arthralgia). These affect more than 3 out of every 10 people taking the medicine.
Important cautions
Do not use Dartmal if you are allergic to artemether, lumefantrine, or any ingredient in the tablet. Taking Dartmal with strong CYP3A4 inducers such as rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, or St. John’s wort can reduce its effectiveness. Avoid use if you have a prolonged QT interval (a heart rhythm condition), low potassium or magnesium levels, or if you are taking other medicines that prolong the QT interval. Do not take halofantrine (another antimalarial) within one month of taking Dartmal. This medicine is not for severe malaria. It is important to take Dartmal with food.
