What it is
Rosuvastatin is a statin medicine, also called an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor. It works by reducing the production of cholesterol in the body.
What it's used for
It is used as an addition to diet to lower high triglyceride levels (hypertriglyceridemia) in adults, to treat a condition called primary dysbetalipoproteinemia (a type of high cholesterol), and to reduce LDL-C, total-C, and ApoB in adults with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (an inherited form of high cholesterol).
Common side effects
Common side effects (occurring in more than 2% of people) include headache, muscle pain (myalgia), abdominal pain, weakness (asthenia), and nausea.
Important cautions
Serious side effects include muscle damage (myopathy and rhabdomyolysis) that can lead to kidney failure. The risk is higher with the 40 mg dose, in people aged 65 and older, in those with thyroid problems or kidney impairment, and when taken with certain other medicines. Stop taking and contact your doctor if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness.
