Common side effects
The most common side effect is diarrhoea. Other possible side effects include sore throat (pharyngolaryngeal pain) and gastrointestinal discomfort. These often occur within 24 hours of starting treatment.
Important cautions
Colchicine can cause serious or fatal overdose if taken in excess. Keep out of reach of children. Do not take colchicine if you have kidney or liver problems and are also taking certain medicines (P-gp inhibitors or strong CYP3A4 inhibitors) – this can be life-threatening. Colchicine may affect blood cell counts; monitor for signs of infection or unusual bleeding.
