In adults, it may also be used in combination with other medicines to treat H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcers.
Common side effects
Serious but rare side effects include severe allergic reactions, changes in heart rhythm (QT prolongation), liver injury, severe diarrhea due to C. difficile, and worsening of muscle weakness in myasthenia gravis. Important cautions
Do not use clarithromycin if you are allergic to it or any macrolide antibiotic. It should not be used together with certain medicines such as cisapride, pimozide, colchicine (in kidney or liver patients), lomitapide, lovastatin, simvastatin, ergot alkaloids, and lurasidone. If you have a history of jaundice or liver problems from clarithromycin, avoid it. People with heart rhythm disorders (QT prolongation), low potassium/magnesium, or slow heart rate should not use it.
