What it's used for
It is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, including corneal ulcers caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and other susceptible bacteria, as well as conjunctivitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. (Effectiveness for some organisms was studied in fewer than 10 infections.)
Common side effects
The most common side effect is a temporary burning or discomfort in the eye. White crystalline deposits in the eye occur in about 17% of patients. Other side effects (occurring in less than 10% of patients) include crusting of the eyelid margin, crystals or scales, a feeling of something in the eye, itching, eye redness, and a bad taste after using the drops. Rarely (less than 1% of patients), corneal staining, keratitis, or allergic reactions may occur.
Important cautions
Do not use Cifran if you are allergic to ciprofloxacin or any fluoroquinolone antibiotic. This medicine is for topical use in the eye only – it must not be injected into the eye. Serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) have been reported rarely with fluoroquinolones; seek immediate medical help if you develop rash, itching, swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing.
