It is used to treat anemia (low red blood cells) in patients with chronic kidney disease (whether on dialysis or not), in patients with HIV infection taking zidovudine, and in patients receiving cancer chemotherapy (when at least two more months of chemotherapy are planned). It is also used to reduce the need for blood transfusions in adults having elective, noncardiac, nonvascular surgery.
Common side effects
Serious side effects may include increased risk of blood clots, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, seizures, pure red cell aplasia, and allergic reactions. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, leg swelling, severe headache, or signs of an allergic reaction.
Important cautions
Do not use Binocrit if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, if you have developed pure red cell aplasia after previous ESA treatment, or if you have a serious allergy to it. The multi-dose vial contains benzyl alcohol and must not be used in newborns, infants, pregnant or breastfeeding women. Targeting a hemoglobin level above 11 g/dL increases the risk of serious heart and blood vessel problems. Use with caution if you have heart disease or a history of stroke.
