What it is

Abdoe-Bismuth is a brand of bismuth subsalicylate, a medicine that acts as both an antidiarrhoeal and an antacid. It helps calm the stomach and control diarrhoea.

What it's used for

This medicine is typically used to relieve travellers’ diarrhoea and to soothe an upset stomach that results from eating or drinking too much. It can ease symptoms like heartburn, indigestion, nausea, gas, belching, and a feeling of fullness.

How it's taken

Abdoe-Bismuth is available as a suspension. The dosing instructions for the brand's chewable tablet form (which may differ) recommend that adults and children over 12 years chew or dissolve the medicine in the mouth. However, since the registered product is a suspension, always follow the directions on the bottle or your doctor's advice. Do not exceed the recommended amount and stop using it after two days. Children under 12 should only use it if a doctor says so. Drink plenty of clear fluids to prevent dehydration from diarrhoea.

Common side effects

Common side effects may include temporary darkening of the tongue or stools. This is harmless and goes away. Some people may experience constipation or a metallic taste in the mouth.

Important cautions

Do not give Abdoe-Bismuth to children or teenagers who have or are recovering from chicken pox or flu-like symptoms, because of the risk of Reye’s syndrome – a rare but serious illness. If you notice changes in behaviour with nausea and vomiting, contact a doctor immediately. This product contains salicylate; do not take it if you are allergic to salicylates (including aspirin). Always consult a doctor or pharmacist before use, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medicines.
